Leave a review on the App Store. I read them, and I answer — publicly, so you can see exactly how issues get handled. Bug reports, feature requests, confusion about how something works: all welcome there.

Getting started

• You'll need an Anthropic API key. Create one at console.anthropic.com (Anthropic bills you directly for what your stories use — Backstory adds nothing on top). Paste it during onboarding or in Settings.
• The in-app guide (Settings → How Backstory works) explains the turn grammar, the knowledge ledger, sealed envelopes, and the rest of the machinery.

Common questions

• Why bring my own key? It's what makes the privacy story possible: no account, no middleman, your words go from your device to Anthropic and nowhere else — and you pay actual usage cost, not a marked-up subscription.
• How much does the API cost to use? The app shows you the real cost of every reply, and a Spend dashboard in Settings totals it by day and story. Context is aggressively cached to keep long sessions cheap.
• Where are my backups? Files app → On My iPhone → Backstory → Backups. Daily automatic JSON backups, restorable from Settings. Your data is yours — take it with you anytime.
• Is my writing used to train anything? Not by us — we never see it. For Anthropic's handling of API data, see their policy.
